FAQ Answers

What can a website do for me?

The answer to this question is neither short nor easy. With a little research and thought you can find hundreds of reasons, but there are a few general statements that may help you realize your needs. First a website can reach millions of people that might not otherwise be available. Second, customers can view products, services, or whatever you want to share from the comfort of their own home. Third, many people overlook the various products, services, or business processes they can include on a website. Any communication or interactions that happen within your business can be made easier and more efficient by the web. No matter what type of business you are in, there are ways to grow and make money on the web.

Does my business need a website?

Ask yourself, "Does my business need 24-hour exposure 7 days a week, 365 days a year?"   The answer is obvious.  What other medium allows you to expose all the benefits of your small business to your target market at their convenience and provide a source of direct correspondence from them to you? The benefits of a website are innumerable.

Why does it matter how it looks as long as it works?

When you receive a visitor to your site, they will instantly perceive the quality of your services or products. The first impression a customer or potential customer gets depends on the appearance of your website. A visitor will be interested and explore your site if it is appealing and easy to navigate. You are marketing yourself and your business to the world over the Internet and it is important to show your best.

What is the difference between a “static” and a “dynamic” site?

A static site is one that is written in HTML only. Each page is a separate document and there is no database that it draws on. What this means functionally is that the only way to edit the site is to go into each page and edit the HTML - so you'd either have to do it yourself using a webpage editor like DreamWeaver CS3 or pay me to go in and edit the site each time you wanted something changed.

A dynamic site is written using more complex code and can do a lot more. For instance, I can make an area where you can log in and change various parts of the site, such as adding information or products. This is because each page is constructed based on the information in a database, and the information in that database can be changed via another interface.

Dynamic sites can reduce ongoing maintenance costs if you don't want to change things yourself with a webpage editor or with the HTML. They usually cost more to develop, as they require more complex coding and a content management utility needs to be developed to help you manage your website information.

Another benefit of dynamic sites is that they allow you to change only the content of the site and not the design, so you will not be able to accidentally break the visual style of the site. They have other benefits when sites start to get very large, as they make data management much more efficient and your site more expandable.

Many clients do a combination, having some dynamic areas such as a product catalog where they have to change information or pictures regularly, and leave other pages such as contact information as static pages.

How do I establish a strong presence on the Web?

The five easy steps we provide below will guide you in the direction of a professionally designed, developed and marketed Web site.

Step One: Planning – The planning is the most important factor to consider when creating a new site. It consists of site goals, target audience determination, market research and information gathering.

Step Two: Domain Name (URL) Registration -- This is the address people will use to access your Web site (www.yourcompany.com). Once you have determined that the URL you wish to use is available, the cost to register a name is anywhere from $9.99 to $35.00 per year. A domain name needs to be renewed periodically.

Step Three: Design of the Web Site -- This is where the look, feel, and content of the Web site are determined and created.

Step Four: Hosting Your Web Site on a Web Server -- This is basically where you rent space on a computer that is always connected to the Internet. Price will vary, depending on the amount of disk space you will have and the connection to the Internet.

Step Five: Marketing Your Web Site -- You should be thinking about the marketing of your Web site as it is being designed. The content of the site needs to reflex the search terms if you want your site to appear on search engines.

How many pages do I need?

This all depends on how much content you have. Every business website should have an About Us page (or something similarly titled) to tell your visitors about your business. After that, it depends on what type of business you have. A good rule of thumb is to not overwhelm your audience with too much information on each page. Disperse the information and break it up into digestible pages and paragraphs. Long pages of text tend to overwhelm the reader.  Break content up to truly get your audience's attention.

What if I just want one page?

No problem. In fact, we strongly suggest to get at least one page online to achieve a web presence. Whilst you'll likely need more pages in order for your site to become effective, we will help you develop a plan to accommodate this. Start small but do start now!

I've seen free web page makers; why pay a designer?

Almost anyone can create a web site with software available today. However, the success of a site is dependant on methodical planning and design that functions well and appeals visually to its intended audience. Software of this nature produce commonly used templates, so your site will lack flexibility and have the look of other common, software generated pages. Only a skilled, creative and an experienced web designer can create a tailored design for you, based on your own requirements. It's really a case of the level of professionalism you want to project to your audience and the effectiveness you want your site to achieve!

This question is difficult to answer as it will depend on factors pertaining to your own requirements. But generally it takes anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months to design and develop a web site. Most individual and small business web sites take 3 to 4 weeks, medium business web sites take 5 weeks to 3 months, and larger web sites can take 3 months or more. You will be fully advised of this before commencement of any work.

How can you assure me the quality of your design?

Like all designers, proof of quality can be attained by completed sites. This site is our best but just one example of evidence of our work quality. While quality in site design may mean different things to different people, we are of the opinion that HTML code validation, appearance, functionality and accessibility are the determining factors of quality. Some of these factors are hard to quantify as they are subjective but we will provide tools that can best determine the quality of work. We provide one example of this on the bottom of our home page as proof that our HTML coding is W3C compliant.

A domain name is a specific web site address that you choose and register with Network Solutions(the official registrar of domain names ending in .com, .edu, and .gov). Our domain name is “WebDesignNetworks.com".

[Return to Questions]

What domain name should I choose?

This depends on how you are going to use it. If you are going to be telling people over the phone, choose one that is easy to say and spell out loud. Above all, I would choose one that is memorable and not confusing.

[Return to Questions]

Can you register my domain name for me?

Yes. Your domain name is your address in cyberspace, and often it is the only way someone knows to contact you. It is important that you keep good track of it and keep your contact information updated on your domain record so that nothing happens to it. I always recommend that people have full control and knowledge of how to administer their domain name, just to be safe.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization is the process of choosing targeted keyword phrases related to a site, and ensuring that the site places well when those keyword phrases are part of a Web search.

[Return to Questions]

When should I optimize my web site?

If we are designing your web site we recommend that it be part of the design process from the beginning. This will only drive additional web site traffic that you wouldn't get if the web site wasn't optimized.

[Return to Questions]

Why can't I find my web site in the search engines?

Once your site has been submitted to the top Search Engines they may require several weeks, or even months to actually spider and list your web site in their directory. How fast your site is listed depends on each individual Search Engines database update schedule. Watch your server traffic logs for visiting spiders. We suggest you use Guaranteed Search Engine Submit. Your site can be listed on AOL, MSN, Google in a couple of days.

[Return to Questions]

Should I pay for Search Engine Optimization?

Every website we build is submitted to the top 5 search engines. However, simply submitting doesn't mean that your site will rank at the top of a search engine when a user searches for content related to your site. A lot of work and research goes into getting your website ranked high.
